FLEXUOSA (ARECACEAE) POPULATION IN A PALM SWAMP OF ESTAÇÃO ECOLÓGICA DO PANGA, UBERLÂNDIA, MINAS GERAIS, BRAZIL
This study was carried out in a "Vereda" (palm swamp) area of Estação Ecológica do Panga (19í° 10'S e 48í° 23' W), Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, aiming to describe M. flexuosa population structure. The palm tree shows arborescent habit and occurs in areas of hydromorphic soil. Data collection took place in July 1997 and 1998 in an area of 2.17 ha. M. flexuosa individuals were classified in three growth stages: juveniles having only leaves; intermediates with stem covered by leaf sheathes; and adults with well defined stem. In the juveniles the height and diameter of the petioles were measured. In the other two stages stem height and diameter were measured. In 1997, 524 individuals of M. flexuosa were found, and of these 494 were juvenile, 4 intermediates, and 26 adults. In 1998, only the number of juveniles was altered, decreasing to 482. The mortality rate for the studied population was 8.02%. The shorter juveniles individuals showed the highest death and growing rates. The occurrence of M. flexuosa was clearly influenced by soil water content.
