GROWTH OF ASPIDOSPERMA SUBINCANUM Mart. SEEDLINGS, UNDER DIFERENT LEVELS OF SHADE
Abstract: Aspidosperma subincanum, Apocynaceae, is a forest species that occurs in gallery forests and semi-deciduous forests and still needs studies towards cultivation and use in programs for reclaiming degraded land. The objective of this work was to study the growth of seedlings of Aspidosperma subincanum in full sun and three shading levels under nursery conditions. The shading levels were on average 50%, 70% and 90% of the full sunlight. The experimental design was randomized with 25 replicates per treatment. Height, stem base diameter, number of leaves and leaflets were monitored from four till 16 months of age and dry matter partition was measured at 16 months of age. The response to the light gradient was small and the growth slow. The species allocated twice more biomass to the roots, with 0.98 g at 16 months under 70% shading, than to aerial parts, with 0,40 g. The highest diameter growth at 16 months (3.46 mm) occurred at 70% shading and did not differ (Tukey test at 5% level) from 50% and full sunlight. These results suggest that this species shows a low plasticity in response to light and a low growth rate, surviving better at intermediate light conditions.
